Pepperdine 92, Long Beach State 81
MALIBU, Calif. (AP)—Tyrone Shelley scored 25 points, including a game-cinching 3-pointer, and Malcolm Thomas added 20 points and 16 rebounds to lead Pepperdine to a 92-81 overtime victory over Long Beach State Wednesday.
Shelly’s 3-point basket with a minute left gave the Waves a seven-point lead.
He finished with nine rebounds and four steals. Mychel Thompson scored all 14 of his points in the second half for Pepperdine (1-4), which never trailed in the extra period after jumping out on a 5-0 spurt.
Maurice Clady scored his only three points when he sank a 40-foot buzzer-beater for the 49ers (1-3).
Greg Plater led Long Beach with 21 points and hit four 3-pointers. He also had six assists.
Donovan Morris and Artis Gant both scored 13 points for the 49ers.
During regulation, Thomas converted a 3-point play and Pepperdine took a 57-56 lead with 8:31 left—its first advantage since the opening minutes of the game.
The lead would change hands three times until overtime.
