Pane leads Houston to 73-66 victory over Texas Southern
HOUSTON (AP)—Brockeith Pane scored 20 points to lead Houston to a 73-66 victory over Texas Southern on Wednesday night.
Houston (4-1) trailed 39-38 with 14:02 remaining after a Sollie Norwood 3-pointer. But the Cougars went on a 16-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 54-41 lead on a Pane layup. Pane had 10 points in the run.
The Tigers cut the lead to five with 2:20 remaining on a Matthew Miller layup that capped a 9-1 run, but Texas Southern (1-3) couldn?t get any closer the rest of the way.
Robert McKiver added 15 points and six rebounds off the bench for the Cougars, and Zamal Nixon scored 10 points. Dion Dowell added nine points and had 11 rebounds and six blocks.
David Burrell led Texas Southern with 19 points. Norwood had 18 points and eight rebounds.
Houston led by as many as eight points, 18-10, with 10:59 remaining the first half on two Dowell free throws before Texas Southern outscored the Cougars 17-5 over the next seven minutes to take a 27-23 lead on an Anthony Ike jumper with 3:32 left in the opening half. The Cougars answered with five straight points before the half to go into halftime up 28-27.
