Rice scores 24 in Boston College 76-72 win over Rhode Island
BOSTON (AP)—Tyrese Rice scored 24 points and Rakim Sanders 21 to lead Boston College to a 76-72 win over Rhode Island on Wednesday afternoon.
Shamari Spears had 12 points and 12 rebounds for BC. Biko Paris chipped in with 9 points—six in the final 5 1/2 minutes—for the Eagles (4-0).
Will Daniels led the Rams (5-1) with 25 points and Lamonte Ulmer had 13.
The game was tied six times in the second half before Rice’s 3-point play pushed the Eagles ahead 67-64 with 3:50 to play.
Daniels answered with a 3-point play after scoring from the paint and hitting a free throw on the Rams’ ensuing possession, tying it for the seventh time and final time.
Paris then hit short runner in the lane, pushing the Eagles ahead 69-67 with 3:04 left. Rice followed with a long 3-pointer from the left wing, but Ulmer had a basket for Rhode Island to cut it to 72-70 with 2:17 to go.
Sanders them helped BC take control with a 3-pointer from the right wing, making it 75-70 with 67 seconds left.
The Rams never threatened in the final minute.
Rice, who shot just 4 for 15 in the opening half, hit consecutive 3-pointers as BC erased a seven-point deficit midway into the second half. The Rams had led 37-30 at halftime.
Al Skinner, who coached at Rhode Island for nine years before coming to BC at the start of the 1997-98 season, earned his 200th win as the Eagles’ coach.
