Seton Hall pulls away from Loyola, Md.
NEWARK, N.J. (AP)—John Garcia scored a career-high 16 points and Jamar Nutter added 23 points as Seton Hall raced past Loyola, Md. 94-80 in the Philly Hoop Group Classic on Tuesday night.
Freshman Jeremy Hazell scored 17 points in 20 minutes for the Pirates (3-0), who avoided a third overtime in as many games.
Loyola (3-2) senior guard Gerald Brown, last season’s 10th-leading scorer nationally at 22.2 points per game, scored 18 points but picked up his third foul with eight minutes left in the first half.
Once Brown was on the bench, the Pirates pressed on defense and forced five of their 13 turnovers in the half to take a commanding 51-36 lead.
The game was tied at 26-26 when Harvey scored eight points and Larry Davis added two steals during an 18-4 onslaught to push their lead to 44-30 with 3:44 remaining.
Nutter, who hit the game-winning basket in an overtime victory last weekend, shot 5-of-11 from beyond the arc to pace Seton Hall’s outside shooting.
Garcia, a 6-foot-9 sophomore center, dominated in the paint with 10 rebounds, six on the offensive side.
Seton Hall held an 8-1 edge on the offensive boards in the first half, and made all but one of their 14 free throws. The Greyhounds made all three attempts at the line.
Harvey and Nutter led Seton Hall with 12 points each at the break, and the Pirates led 51-36 at halftime.
The Greyhounds trailed at the break despite shooting 15-of-26 (57.7 percent) from the field.
