SE Louisiana’s Span gets 17 in win over Southern U
HAMMOND, La. (AP)—Warrell Span scored 12 of his game-high 17 points in the second half and Southeastern Louisiana used a suffocating defense that held Southern University to 24 percent shooting from the floor in a 58-46 win Tuesday night.
Patrick Sultan added 11 points, nine rebounds, six assists and four blocks as Southeastern (3-1) won its seventh game in the last eight meetings against its in-state rival.
Southeastern held Southern (1-3) to 6-for-25 shooting (24.0 percent) in the game and outscored the Jaguars in the paint, 36-8.
Sullivan’s three-point play with 11:34 remaining in the first half gave Southeastern a 13-11 lead that it would not relinquish.
Southern managed to tie the game at 20-20 on Douglas Scott’s jumper at the 5:02 mark, but the Jaguars missed their last seven shots from the floor and the Lions built a 27-22 lead at halftime.
David Ndoumba’s jumper in the lane gave Southeastern a 35-26 lead with 15:02 remaining in the game. Southern never got closer than eight points the rest of the way as Southeastern increased its lead to 54-39 on a layup by Span with 3:24 left.
Scott led Southern, which dropped its third straight, with 14 points while Jazz Williams added 10.
Chris Davis, the leading scorer for the Jaguars entering the game, finished with 10 points but went 1-for-12 from the floor and committed five of Southern’s 14 turnovers.
