BALTIMORE (AP)Jamar Smith scored 16 points and had three blocks as Morgan State downed American 62-54 Tuesday night.

American would pull to within one at 46-45 with 7:46 remaining on a free-throw by Frank Borden, but the Bears (3-1) would go on a 8-2 run over the next three minutes, capped by a Reggie Holmes 3-pointer, to end American?s comeback bid. The Eagles (2-3) would get no closer than four points the rest of the way.

American was led by Garrison Carr’s game-high 18 points and got 13 points and three assists from Derrick Mercer before he fouled out late in the game.

Morgan State allowed American to shoot just 32.1 percent from the field and blocked 12 shots to pick up its third consecutive win for the first time in 20 years.

Jerell Green extended the Morgan lead to 48-45 with 7:23 left to spark the Bear?s decisive run. Green finished with 10 points and three assists.

American pulled to within 56-52 with 1:44 remaining after a Mercer layup, but Holmes responded with a reverse layup on the other end and Morgan State made 5-of-8 free-throw attempts in the last minute to preserve the win.

Holmes finished with 16 points and six rebounds.
