EASTON, Pa. (AP)—Andrew Brown scored 15 points and Matt Betley added 13 points and 11 rebounds as Lafayette defeated UMBC 87-84 in overtime Tuesday night.
Everest Schmidt (14 points), Jeff Kari (11) and Michael Gruner (10) also in double figures for Lafayette (2-2).
UMBC (3-1) shot 50 percent (15-for-30) in the first half and built a 37-26 lead by the break.
Lafayette (2-2) found its scoring touch in the second half, hitting 17 of 29 shots, including 6 of 13 from 3-point range, and outscored UMBC 48-37. With 49 seconds remaining, Jared Mintz grabbed an offensive rebound and Brown hit a jumper to tie the game at 74-all and force overtime.
In the first minute of overtime, Gruner hit his second 3-pointer of the game to give Lafayette its first lead at 77-74. With 2:30 remaining, Mintz converted a pair of free throws to give the Leopards a 79-77 advantage. Lafayette converted eight more free throws the rest of the way to help seal the win.
Ray Barbosa hit four 3-pointers and scored 26 points for UMBC, while Cavell Johnson finished with 22 points and nine rebounds.
