Latunde leads Cal State Bakersfield over Fresno State, 65-64
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (AP)—A jumper by junior Santwon Latunde with 1:39 remaining ended up being the game-winning basket as CSU Bakersfield, in its first official year at the Division I level, claimed a 65-64 win over Fresno State at Rabobank Arena Saturday.
Latunde led the Roadrunners with 13 points while Terrance Johns and Cory Brown added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The win was the first of the season for Bakersfield, which improved to 1-2 overall.
Kevin Bell had a game-high 19 points and six assists for Fresno State (2-2). Hector Hernandez was the only other Bulldog to reach double-figures, chipping in a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The match-up featured 12 lead changes and nine ties with Bakersfield holding the largest lead, 63-54, at the 8:09 mark of the second half.
Fresno State chipped away at the Roadrunners’ lead over the final eight minutes of play, going up 64-63 with just under two minutes remaining. But Lantunde’s bucket along with three straight misses by the Bulldogs allowed Bakersfield to hold on to its narrow margin.
Bakersfield shot 47 percent from beyond the arc for the game while the Bulldogs, who were 7-14 from three in the first half, went cold in the second, hitting just one of seven three-pointers.
