Akognon scores 23 in Cal St. Fullerton’s 78-63 win at S. Utah
CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP)—Josh Akognon scored 23 points and Kenneth Alexander added 17 points to lead Cal State Fullerton in a 78-63 win over Southern Utah on Saturday night.
Akognon hit five 3-pointers for the Titans (3-0), who made their first four shots from beyond the arc and spoiled the home debut of new Southern Utah coach Roger Reid.
The Titans didn’t trail after the first two minutes and led the Thunderbirds (1-2) by 15 at halftime.
Frank Robinson scored 14 points for Fullerton and Junior Russell scored 11.
Geoff Payne led the Thunderbirds with 15 points. David Marek added 12 points and Tate Sorensen finished with 11 points and eight rebounds for Southern Utah.
After going five minutes between field goals, Southern Utah pulled within 20-16 on Nick Livi’s two free throws with 7:38 to go in the first half. But the Thunderbirds only made three more baskets the rest of the half and trailed 39-24 at halftime.
Fullerton increased the lead to 25 points on a jumper by Akognon with 13:40 left to play and coasted to the win.
