Thompson has big day as Rider beats Delaware

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. (AP)—Jason Thompson had 23 points, 21 rebounds and seven blocked shots as Rider held off Delaware 76-71 on Saturday.

Harris Mansell added 16 points for Rider (1-1), while Lamar Johnson came off the bench to score 14.

Four Delaware players finished in double figures, led by Sam McMahon’s 16 points. Brian Johnson had 13 points and seven assists, while Alphonso Dawson had 12 points and Herb Courtney finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Rider led for most of the game, but the Blue Hens (0-2) went on a late 12-2 run and cut the Broncs lead to 72-71 on Marco Cooper’s 3-point play with 52 seconds left to play.

Delaware, though, would not score again, as Thompson and Mansell hit two free throws each down the stretch to seal the win.
