RICHMOND, Va. (AP)—Cavell Johnson’s dunk with 3.2 seconds remaining Saturday night capped a Maryland-Baltimore County rally and lifted the Retrievers to a 70-68 victory over Richmond.
Oumar Syllah’s jumper with 4:10 remaining gave the Spiders a 64-57 lead. The basket ended a 21-11 Richmond spurt over 11:36, led by eight points from Kevin Anderson.
The Retrievers fought back to a 68-68 tie on Johnson’s baseline jumper with 19.5 seconds left. Anderson lost control of the ball, and Jay Greene picked it up for the Retrievers and threw it to Johnson for the game-winning slam.
The Retrievers (3-0) took a 10-point lead with 4:28 remaining in the first half. Richmond (2-3) rallied to tie the game at 32 with 1:25 remaining, but the Retrievers outscored Richmond 7-3 the rest of the way to take a 39-35 halftime lead.
Johnson led the Retrievers with a season-high 20 points. Brian Hodges added 17, Darryl Proctor 14 and Ray Barbosa 11.
The Spiders were led by Anderson’s career-high 13 points. Ryan Butler had 11 points along with three blocks, and Dan Geriot contributed 10 points.
