Clayton leads Appalachian St. in 84-79 win over MTSU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP)—Jeremy Clayton led Appalachian State in its 84-79 win over Middle Tennessee on Saturday in the final game of the First Shot Exempt Tournament.

Clayton had 15 points but was one of five Mountaineers scoring in the double digits. Kellen Brand added 13, Doug McLaughlin-Williams had 12 and Donte Minter and Eduardo Bermudez added 11 each.

Appalachian State shot 68 percent from the field, holding MTSU to 43 percent. The Mountaineers kept the lead through most of the first half, leading 35-31 at the break.

The Blue Raiders tied it 41-41 on a jumper by Nigel Johnson four minutes into the second half but let the lead slip for good with 10 minutes left when Bermudez hit a jumper to make it 55-53.

Kevin Kanaskie led Middle Tennessee with 14 points. Josh Sain had 11 and Dino Hair added 10.
