CHARLOTTE AMALIE, U.S. Virgin Islands (AP)—Leemire Goldwire scored 14 points, including a 3-pointer that put Charlotte ahead for good, in a 64-63 victory over Illinois-Chicago on Saturday night at the Paradise Jam.
Goldwire’s 3-pointer gave the 49ers a 62-60 lead with 12 seconds to play.
Illinois-Chicago had one last chance, but Spencer Stewart missed a jumper and Charles Dewhurst hit two free throws with less than a second left to seal the victory for Charlotte (3-1).
Lamont Mack added 14 points and Ian Anderson had 10 for Charlotte.
With the game tied at 16, Goldwire scored five straight points, including a three-point play, and dished an assist to Anderson for a layup that gave the 49ers a 23-16 lead with 7:40 to play in the first half.
Illinois-Chicago took its first lead on a 3-pointer by Josh Mayo, which capped a 13-2 run and put the Flames (2-2) ahead 40-38 with 12:45 to play.
They briefly regained the lead on a layup by Stewart with 1:05 left before Goldwire hit his 3-pointer.
Mayo, who led all scorers with 15 points, closed out the scoring with a 3-pointer from half court as time expired. Spencer added 11 for the Flames.
