Louisiana Tech uses balanced scoring in win over La-Lafayette
RUSTON, La. (AP)—Four Louisiana Tech players scored in double figures and the Bulldogs used a 9-2 run with 2:38 remaining in the game to help them defeat Louisiana-Lafayette 64-56 on Friday.
Keith Smith paced the Bulldogs (1-1) with 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting, while J.C. Clark and Orren Tims each added 12. James Loe poured in 10 off the bench in 23 minutes of action.
Louisiana-Lafayette’s Elijah Millsap led all players with 15 points and 10 rebounds. David Dees added 11 for the Ragin’ Cajuns and matched Millsap in rebounding, while La’Ryan Gary added 11 points as well.
Louisiana Tech extended its 30-28 halftime lead by five points early in the second period. The Cajuns (1-1) would tie the game at 36, but Tech followed with a five-point run of its own to take a 41-36 lead with 12:33 to play.
The Bulldogs then built its lead to as many as nine points, 50-41. Louisiana-Lafayette cut the lead to 54-52 with 2:49 remaining in the game.Tech added a free throw for a three-point lead, 55-52, before Chris Gradnigo brought Louisiana-Lafayette within one, 55-54, on a layup. But, with just 49 seconds left on the clock, Tech preserved the win with a turn-around jump shot by Smith.
The Cajuns shot just 25 percent in the second half.
