Hackett returns with 21 to lead USC to 74-47 win over The Citadel
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP)—Daniel Hackett scored 21 points and heralded freshman O.J. Mayo added 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists to lead Southern California to a 74-47 win over The Citadel on Thursday night.
The Trojans (1-1) never trailed as they bounced back from a shocking loss to Mercer to open the season.
Hackett, who missed the opener because of a broken jaw, buried his first shot, a 3-pointer. Demetrius Nelson hit two free throws on the next possession for the Bulldogs (1-2), who then went cold.
USC would score the next 19 points to take a 22-2 lead with eight minutes left in the half. The Trojans shot 60 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, while the Bulldogs made just seven of their 27 shots.
The Trojans led by 15 at halftime and the 27-point final margin matched their biggest lead of the game.
USC finished the game shooting 56.6 percent (30-of-53) from the field and made six of their 13 3-pointers. USC outrebounded the Bulldogs 42-28 and had 40 points in the paint, compared to 22 for The Citadel.
The Bulldogs shot 32.1 percent (18-of-56) and made just five of their 21 3-pointers.
Taj Gibson scored 13 points and had seven rebounds, while Kasey Cunningham added six points and 10 rebounds for USC.
Nelson led The Citadel with 15 points and seven rebounds, and Austin Dahn added 10 points.
USC continues its East Coast swing on Saturday at South Carolina.
