Second-half run lifts Fairfield over American
WASHINGTON (AP)—Greg Nero scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half to lead Fairfield to a 60-52 win over American on Thursday night.
Jonathan Han had 15 points, seven assists and four steals and Anthony Johnson added 14 points and three steals for Fairfield (1-2).
Derrick Mercer led the Eagles (1-2) with 18 points and Garrison Carr scored 17.
Mercer’s 3-pointer with about eight minutes left put the Eagles ahead 43-41. But Nero converted a three-point play, then put back a rebound and hit a pair of free throws to key a 7-0 run over the next two minutes that put the game away for the Stags.
American led 30-21 at halftime before Fairfield came back with a 14-0 run. The Eagles, who had led by as many as 11, went more than seven minutes without a basket.
