Jonus leads Troy to 133-131 overtime win over Paul Quinn
TROY, Ala. (AP)—Justin Jonus had 44 points—including a free throw with one second remaining to tie the score and send the game into overtime—to lead Troy to a 133-131 win over Paul Quinn Wednesday night.
After leading for much of the first half, the Trojans (1-1) led 65-59 going into the break and widened their lead to 13 points early in the second period. But the Tigers took the lead on a 3-pointer by Johnathan Alexander with 6:36 to go.
The lead went back and forth in the overtime, but neither team led by more than two points until the Trojans widened their lead to five points at 133-128 on a 3-pointer by Trayce Macon with 21 seconds left.
The Tigers rallied, reducing Troy’s lead to two, on a 3-pointer by Damien Chisholm, but they couldn’t take back the lead.
Aside from Jonus, who transferred to Troy from Alabama, Troy had four other double figure scorers. O’Darien Bassett had 24 points and 7 assists. Trayce had 21 points and nine rebounds. Tom Jervis had a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Michael Vogler had 12 points and seven assists.
Chisholm led Paul Quinn’s seven double digit scorers with 42 points. Jazz Henderson had 27, Joseph Cormadelle had 15, Alexander had 13 and Demontre Rutledge chipped in with 12 points. Jackie Ransom had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds, and Cedric Brooks added 10 more points.
