COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP)—Tim Green scored 20 points and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi used strong free throw shooting in overtime to hold on for a 86-81 win over Oral Roberts on Wednesday night in the preseason NIT consolation game.
Seven of the Islanders’ (1-2) nine points in overtime came from free throws with Shannon Shorter hitting four in the last 35 seconds to secure the victory. Shorter finished with 16 points.
The Golden Eagles’ Marcus Lewis made a layup with 11 seconds left in regulation to tie it at 77-all. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi’s Kevin Perkins turned the ball over with one second left and it went to overtime.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi trailed by as many as 14 points in the second half before going on an 18-4 run to cut the lead to 64-62 with 7 minutes remaining. Oral Roberts then pushed the lead back to 67-62 on a 3-pointer by Moses Ehambe.
The Islanders outscored the Golden Eagles 8-2 over the next two minutes to take a 70-69 lead with 4:20 remaining.
Lewis led Oral Roberts (1-2) with 28 points and seven rebounds and Robert Jarvis added 22 points.
The Islanders got 17 points from Perkins and 15 points apiece from Justin Reynolds and Chris Daniels. Reynolds also had 13 rebounds.
