Missouri-Kansas City holds on for win over Division II foe
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP)—Brent Stephens scored a career-high 28 points Tuesday to lead Missouri-Kansas City to a 79-75 win over Division II Washburn University.
UMKC (1-1) trailed briefly in the first half and could never quite shake the Ichabods. Stephens hit seven free throws in the last 2:28 of the game to keep the Kangaroos on top, and was 11-of-11 from the line overall.
Dane Brumagin had 15 points for Missouri-Kansas City and Reggie Hamilton had 13.
Andrew Meile led Washburn with 19 points, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range. Paul Byers and Grant Hargett each had 12 points for the Ichabods, and Darrell Kimbell had 11.
The game was part of the round-robin Jayhawk Invitational Tournament. It counted as a regular season game for UMKC, but was an exhibition contest for Washburn.
It was the first win for new Kangaroos coach Matt Brown.
