Cunningham leads Holy Cross to 67-54 win over Fairfield

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP)—Colin Cunningham scored 17 points to lead Holy Cross to a 67-54 win over Fairfield on Tuesday.

Alex Vander Baan and Pat Doherty each had 11 points for the Crusaders (2-0), who led for most of the game despite committing 22 turnovers.

Yorel Hawkins had 11 points for Fairfield (0-2) in the Stags’ home opener.

Holy Cross had a 36-27 lead at the break, but the Stags chipped away early in the second half. Marty O’Sullivan’s baseline jumper got Fairfield within four at 48-44 with 9:03 left.

The Crusaders then held the Stags to just two points for nearly 7 minutes. Holy Cross used an 11-2 run to built a 49-46 lead with 2:40 remaining.

The Crusaders, who shot 16-of-37 from the floor (43.2 percent), hit 29 of 33 free throws (87.9 percent). They also finished with an edge on the board, outrebounding the Stags 33-20.
