Calathes scores 20, St. Joseph’s beats Fairleigh Dickinson 86-66
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP)—Pat Calathes scored 20 points and pulled down eight rebounds and Ahmad Nivins scored 19 points and had nine rebounds to lead Saint Joseph’s to an 86-66 win over Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round of the NIT Season Tip-off Monday.
Tasheed Carr added 11 points and 12 assists to help lead the Hawks to the win.
Saint Joseph’s (1-0) will meet Syracuse (1-0) in Tuesday’s second-round game after the Orange held off Siena (0-2) 97-89 in the night’s opening game.
Fairleigh Dickinson (0-1) and Siena will meet in the consolation game.
Saint Joseph’s shot 62 percent overall in the game (33-of-53).
Fairleigh Dickinson never led. The Knights had a tough time with the Nivins and Calathes inside-outside combination. If they took away Nivins, Calathes was there to hit from the outside and Nivins was dominant in the paint.
Bernell Murray led the Knights with 18 points, Sean Baptiste had 16, Manny Ubilla 14 and Eric Hazard 11.
Lidzius scored seven of his 11 points during a 12-3 run midway through the first half that helped give the Hawks a 46-32 halftime lead.
