Inman scores 24 to lead Rutgers over NC Central
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP)—JR Inman scored 24 points and Rutgers gradually pulled away in the second half for a 73-48 victory over North Carolina Central in the Blue Ribbon Challenge Monday night.
Anthony Farmer added 14 points and Jaron Griffin had 13 for Rutgers, which is 3-0 for the second time in three years and for the first time under Fred Hill. NCC (0-2), in the midst of a season-opening stretch of games with Duke, Rutgers and Florida, got 19 points from Bryan Ayala and 17 from Charles Futrell.
Coming off a 121-56 loss to Duke in which they trailed by 23 at halftime, the Eagles managed to keep it relatively close for one half against Rutgers. With 7:22 left, the Scarlet Knights held only a 20-17 lead.
After trailing by 11 at halftime, the Eagles cut the deficit to six early in the second half on a Futrell bucket. But Rutgers then surged, opening a 21-point advantage with 9:37 remaining.
Rutgers concludes the Blue Ribbon Challenge Saturday at Florida, where the Scarlet Knights will attempt to sweep an in-season tournament for the first time since going 2-0 in the Jersey Classic in Piscataway during the 1980-81 season.
