Columbia 47, Delaware St. 41
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP)—John Baumann scored 21 points and Columbia overcame a poor shooting night to hold off Delaware State 47-41 on Monday night in the opening round of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Ohio State’s Value City Arena.
The Lions (1-0) advance to meet the winner of the nightcap between Wisconsin-Green Bay and Ohio State.
Patrick Foley added 11 points and Joeph Bova 10 for Columbia, which won despite hitting just 29 percent of its shots in the second half and 36 percent for the game.
Bauman (9), Foley (8) and Bova (8) scored all of the points in the first half as the Lions built a 25-19 lead.
Columbia scored the first seven points of the second half and the lead never fell below five points again. Trevor Welcher’s layup with 1:37 left cut the lead to 44-39, but Baumann hit a foul shot and Foley added two more to push the lead back to eight with just under a minute left.
Marcus Neal led Delaware State (2-1) with 10 points.
