Inman leads Rutgers over North Dakota State
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP)—J.R. Inman had 21 points and 11 rebounds to lead Rutgers to a 79-67 win over North Dakota State in the Blue Ribbon Challenge Sunday.
Anthony Farmer scored 17 for Rutgers (2-0) and Corey Chandler added 14 points, five assists and three steals.
NDSU (0-2), a member of the newly-formed Summit League, gave its second straight foe from a major conference a tough game thanks to 24 points and seven assists from Ben Woodside and 18 points and 11 rebounds from Brett Winkelman.
Rutgers spent most of the game’s first 13 minutes either tied or trailing before a three-pointer from Griffin began an 8-0 run that gave the Scarlet Knights a 19-15 lead. Rutgers took two seven-point leads before NDSU cut it to 30-27 at halftime. Both teams shot under 40 percent during the half.
There were six lead changes and five ties in the first 11 minutes of the second half before Rutgers took control with six straight points to make it 58-52.
NDSU, which lost a tough game against Florida in its opener, battled back to tie it at 61 before Rutgers went on its decisive run.
With the score tied at 61-61 and 4:05 remaining, Courtney Nelson hit a three-pointer to give Rutgers the lead for good.
Inman made one of two foul shots and Farmer and Chandler followed with jumpers to provide a 69-61 advantage with 2:08 remaining.
The Bison never got closer than six, as the Scarlet Knights went 6-for-6 from the foul line in the final 52 seconds.
NDSU is in its final season of becoming eligible for Division I play.
