Doherty scores 18 to lead Holy Cross over Hofstra
WORCESTER, Mass. (AP)—Pat Doherty scored 18 points and Holy Cross outscored Hofstra 17-3 during a nearly nine-minute stretch at the end of the first half and start of the second for a 61-47 win on Saturday might.
Alex Vander Baan added 10 points with 15 rebounds for Holy Cross (1-0). Antoine Aguido scored 28 points for Hofstra (0-1).
There were two ties and six lead changes in the first half, with Aguido scoring a layup to give the Pride a 19-18 lead with 6:56 remaining inthe first half. Vander Baan scored on a layup at the 5:24 mark for a 20-19 lead, and the Crusaders began to steadily pull away.
Holy Cross outscored the Pride 13-5 to the end of the half.
Holy Cross pulled ahead 38-24 with 17:54 left in the game. The Pride’s Dane Johnson converted a free throw, but Colin Cunningham scored two free throws and Vander Baan and Doherty added field goals to give the Crusaders a 44-27 lead with 12:48 left.
Aguido, who was 6-13 in three-pointers, led the Pride on an 13-8 run to pull within 45-35. Darren Townes then made a steal and dunked to make it 52-42 with 4:03 remaining.
Kyle Cruze answered with a 3-point field goal to ignite a 12-2 over the next 3:40 to clinch the contest.
