Jenkins has 17 as ECU wins season opener
GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP)—Darrell Jenkins scored 13 of his 17 points before halftime to lead East Carolina to a 78-60 victory over Limestone Saturday in the debut of new head coach Mack McCarthy.
Jenkins and Cory Farmer made back-to-back 3s to open the scoring, leading to a 14-0 run that put the Pirates in command.
Consecutive lay-ups from Sam Hinnant and John Fields were followed by a pair of free throws, and Gabe Blair capped the spurt with another lay-up.
Limestone, also in its season opener, responded with a run of its own and took a 16-15 lead with 11:28 remaining in the half. The Pirates regained the edge and finished the half with a 29-10 run for a 44-26 lead at the break.
Fields added 14 points and freshman Brock Young had 10 in his first game at ECU.
Limestone senior Marques Williams led all scorers with 24 points.
East Carolina limited Limestone to 29.0 percent shooting in the first half and 36.7 percent for the game. Fields and Jenkins each shot 6-of-8 from the field as the Pirates finished the game shooting 45.6 percent.
