Towson 83, Loyola, Md. 69
BALTIMORE (AP)—Junior Hairston scored 26 points and grabbed 21 rebounds and Rocky Coleman added 15 points to lead Towson to an 83-69 win over Loyola, Md. on Friday at the Towson Center Arena.
Leading by two at halftime, the Tigers (2-0) opened the second half with a 9-0 run for a 38-29 advantage before Loyola guard Marquis Sullivan connected with a 3-pointer and a free throw with 16:41 left in the game.
Greyhounds guard Gerald Brown paced Loyola (1-1) with 17 points, six rebounds and five assists, and Sullivan added 16 points and four rebounds in the loss. Brown picked up a rebound and delivered a pass to Joe Miles for a reverse layup, giving the Greyhounds a 47-46 advantage their first lead of the game with 13:17 to play. But Jonathan Pease put Towson back ahead with a 3-pointer from the left wing, and the Tigers went on a 16-2 run to put the game out of reach.
Coleman found Hairston under the basket for an open layup to put Tigers ahead, 77-69, with 1:15 left, and Hairston made three free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
Miles finished with 11 points for Loyola, and teammate Brett Harvey was 3-for-5 from beyond the arc for nine points. Rodney Spurill scored 12 points, and senior guard C.C. Williams had a game-high seven assists. Hairston had six points and 10 rebounds—seven offensive—at halftime for Towson. Brown led all scorers at halftime with 10 points.
