Inman, Chandler lead Rutgers over Tennessee Tech
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP)—JR Inman scored 18 points and Corey Chandler added 16 to lead Rutgers over Tennessee Tech 70-64 Friday in the inaugural Blue Ribbon Challenge.
Inman, Rutgers leading scorer last year, was limited by foul trouble to two points in the first half but scored 16 second-half points for the Scarlet Knights (1-0). He tied the game 57-57 on a 3-pointer midway through the second half to start a 14-0 run that put Tennessee Tech (0-1) behind for good.
“I wasn’t even planning to go off on a rampage like that in the second half,” Inman said. “I stepped up and shot my open shots and had the opportunity and seized it.”
Chandler, a freshman from Newark, started and scored nine of his 11 first-half points as Rutgers jumped to an 11-3 lead. Rutgers led 35-32 at halftime.
An Inman 3-pointer gave Rutgers a 43-36 lead early in the second half, but a 12-0 run allowed the Golden Eagles to take a 48-43 lead.
Anthony Fisher led Tennessee Tech with 15 points.
Rutgers, which improved to 27-4 in openers at the Louis Brown Athletic Center, will host North Dakota State as the Blue Ribbon Challenge continues Sunday. Tennessee Tech plays at Florida.
Rutgers coach Fred Hill was pleased with his team’s showing, especially Inman.
“I thought he had an outstanding game for us,” said Rutgers coach Fred Hill. “I thought he showed his leadership.”
