Will Thomas has 16 points, 17 rebounds to lead George Mason over Vermont
FAIRFAX, Va. (AP)—Will Thomas had 16 points and a career-high 17 rebounds and George Mason came from behind in the second half for a 60-53 victory over Vermont on Friday night in the season opener for both teams.
John Vaughan, Folarin Campbell, and Jordan Carter each added 11 points for the Patriots, who used a 26-10 run over the final 11 minutes to overcome a 43-36 deficit.
Marques Blakely led Vermont with 17 points, while Mike Trimboli added 14.
Thomas battled leg cramps throughout the second half and was pulled with 2:50 remaining. He returned with 16 seconds left to get a key rebound and hit a free throw.
His inside presence helped George Mason outrebound the Catamounts, 52-38, including 27-15 in the second half. The Patriots also hit 10 of 12 free throws in the final five minutes after going just 2-for-8 in the first half.
Neither team shot well in the first half, but Thomas, who had 10 points and 11 rebounds before halftime, led a 9-2 run over the final 4:43 to give the Patriots a 24-19 at the half.
