Campbell scores 17 to lead Butler over Ball State
MUNCIE, Ind. (AP)—Pete Campbell scored 17 points, including 5-of-11 three-point shooting, to lead Butler over Ball State 61-45 in the season opener for both teams Friday.
Matt Howard had 14 points and A.J. Graves 11 for the Bulldogs. Mike Green had 11 points and six rebounds.
Anthony Newell had 16 points in the Cardinals’ (0-1) first game under new head coach Billy Taylor.
Peyton Stovall, who came into the game needing 21 points to break the 1,000-point mark for his career, had 13, pushing his current mark to 992.
He also grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and had three assists.
With the score tied at 2-2 early, the Bulldogs (1-0) went on a 7-0 run. The Cardinals scored just 17 points in the first period and trailed 31-17 at the half.
In the second half Ball State closed to within 39-31 before fouling Ball State guard Mike Green. Ball State closed to nine points at 42-33 with 11:13 on the clock, but Butler scored the next eight points and the Cardinals never again came close.
