Central Arkansas defeats Ala. A&M in tournament consolation game
LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP)—Durrell Nevels had 13 points and a career-high 20 rebounds to lead Central Arkansas past Alabama A&M 69-59 Wednesday in a consolation game of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic.
The Bears made 38 percent of their shots from the field one night after No. 20 Kentucky kept them to 20 percent—the Wildcats’ best defensive performance since 1995.
It was the 10th career double-double for Nevels, a senior forward. Central Arkansas won the rebounding battle 54-30.
York Sims added 13 points for the Bears, and Jabari Deshields led Alabama A&M with 20.
The Bulldogs, who lost to Gardner-Webb in the tournament’s opening round Tuesday, trailed by 11 midway through the first half but took a 27-26 lead at halftime after a 3-pointer by Lanorris Smith.
Central Arkansas took the lead for good at the beginning of the second half with a jumper by Brian Marks.
Lexington was one of the host cities for the tournament benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer. The regional winners advance to Madison Square Garden for the semifinals next week in New York.
