Norfolk St. 81, Md.-Eastern Shore 70
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP)—Tony Murphy scored 24 points to lead Norfolk State to a 81-70 victory Wednesday over Maryland-Eastern Shore during the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference tournament.
Corey Lyons added 19 points and Tynell Dunkley chipped in 15 for Norfolk State (11-18), which held Maryland-Eastern Shore to 37.1 percent shooting. Calvin Brown grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.
The sixth-seeded Spartans advance to play third-seeded North Carolina A&T on Thursday.
Norfolk State led 43-29 at the break. The 11th-seeded Hawks came back in the second half to outscore the Spartans 41-38 but couldn’t pull off an upset.
The Spartans shot 50 percent for the game and shot 82.9 percent from the free-throw line.
Ed Tyson led all players with 30 points for the Hawks (4-27), while Corey Brown added 14 points.
