Jackson St. 74, Southern 65
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP)—Grant Maxey had 22 points and nine rebounds to lead Jackson State to a 74-65 win over Southern Wednesday in the opening round of the Southwestern Athletic Conference tournament.
Second-seeded Jackson State (19-13) forced 25 turnovers and made 17-of-20 free throws to beat the defending tournament champions.
Trey Johnson had 16 points and four assists despite a 4-for-17 shooting performance for the Tigers. Catraiva Givens added 15 points and Julius Young 10.
Chris Davis led Southern (10-21) with 20 points, making 4-of-9 3-pointers. Douglas Scott added 10 points.
Jackson State shot 54 percent in the first half, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range, to build a 38-29 lead.
The Tigers will face the Grambling State-Arkansas-Pine Bluff winner in Friday’s semifinals.
