Hampton 76, Howard 61
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP)—Matthew Pilgrim scored 21 points to lead four Hampton players in double figures Tuesday as the Pirates defeated Howard 76-61 during the opening round of the Mid-Eastern Atlantic Conference tournament.
Michael Freeman added 18 points and a game-high nine rebounds for Hampton (15-15), which shot 60 percent and hit 81.3 percent from the free throw line. Rashad West added 17 points and Vincent Simpson chipped in 11.
Hampton, seeded seventh in the tournament, will face second-seeded Florida A&M on Wednesday.
Hampton led 39-25 at the break and held Howard to 37.5 percent shooting for the game. Tenth-seeded Howard scored only 10 points in the paint compared to Hampton’s 32 points.
Hampton led by as many as 22 points, at 1:49 in the second half, while Howard took only a one-point lead at 19:03 in the first half.
Darryl Hudson led Howard with 15 points. Darek Mitchell added 14 points, Will Gant scored 12 and Julius Hearn finished with 10.
