Oral Roberts 79, Centenary 59
TULSA, Okla. (AP)—Mid-Continent Conference player of the year Caleb Green scored 25 points and Ken Tutt added 17 points to lead Oral Roberts past Centenary 79-59 on Saturday night in the first round of the conference tournament.
The top-seeded Golden Eagles (21-10) advanced to play either IUPUI or Southern Utah in the semifinals Monday as they seek their second straight Mid-Con tournament championship.
Green, a three-time conference player of the year who leads the nation in free throws per game, hit 11-of-14 from the line to lead Oral Roberts, the league’s regular-season champion.
Alexander Starr scored 20 points for the eighth-seeded Gents (10-21).
Oral Roberts took control with a 7-0 run to start the second half, making it 42-29 on Yemi Ogunoye’s dunk with 18:04 remaining. The Golden Eagles pushed the lead to 51-35 on Tutt’s spinning lay-up with 14:10 left.
The Gents pulled within 58-50 on Lance Hill’s 3-pointer from the right wing with 8:41 to play, but Tutt and Green led the Golden Eagles on another 7-0 run to put the Gents away for good.
Oral Roberts started sluggishly, turning the ball over on six of its first eight possessions while Centenary built an 11-4 lead. Starr scored the Gents’ first 11 points.
Green’s put-back and his basket and free throw ignited the Golden Eagles, who used an 11-3 run to take their first lead at 15-14 with 11:50 left in the half. They led 35-29 at halftime.
