Mount St. Mary’s 78, Robert Morris 61
CORAOPOLIS, Pa. (AP)—Mychal Kearse had 19 points and eight rebounds and Mount St. Mary’s defeated Robert Morris 78-61 in the first round of the Northeast Conference tournament on Thursday night.
Jeremy Goode added 13 points and Chris Vann and Gus Durr 12 each for the fifth-seeded Mountaineers (11-19), who advance to play at top-seeded Central Connecticut State in Sunday’s semifinals.
A.J. Jackson led the Colonials (17-11) with 20 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
It was the largest margin of defeat this season for fourth-seeded Robert Morris, which didn’t lose a regular-season game at home by more than five points.
Mount St. Mary’s shot 53 percent from the field; the Colonials shot only 36 percent.
Robert Morris shot 3-for-22 from 3-point range, including 1-for-15 in the second half.
The Colonials scored 13 of the first 19 points, but the Mountaineers scored the next nine to take a lead. Mount St. Mary’s never trailed the final 27 minutes.
It was the sixth meeting between the teams in the last two seasons, and the first that was decided by more than five points. The teams met last season in the NEC quarterfinals, a game won 67-66 by Robert Morris.
