Tulane 88, East Carolina 72
NEW ORLEANS (AP)—Chris Moore tied his career-high with 22 points and David Gomez added 20 points to lead Tulane to an 88-72 Conference USA victory Wednesday over East Carolina.
The victory guaranteed the Green Wave (15-12, 8-7) its first winning season in four years.
Tulane trailed just once in the contest when East Carolina’s Courtney Captain drilled a three-pointer to give the Pirates a 12-9 advantage, which marked their largest lead of the game.
The Green Wave quickly responded when Gomez was fouled on a lay-up, but his shot found its mark, and he connected on the free throw for the conventional three-point play and tied the game, 12-12. The play, however, ignited an 18-4 Green Wave run over the next four minutes that culminated with a lay-up by Kory Castine to give Tulane an 11-point, 27-16, lead with 10:05 remaining in the first half.
East Carolina’s Darrell Jenkins scored both Pirate buckets during the run and his second jumper spurred a 9-2 run that helped pull his team to within four points at the 7:41 mark. Justin Ramsey followed with a jumper to cut the lead to a basket. East Carolina had a chance to tie the game, but Captain’s jumper was off the mark and the Pirates were never able to threaten again.
Tulane led by as many as 17 points on two occasions during the final minutes of the first half and took a 52-36 lead into the break.
The Green Wave led by double figures the entire second half.
Robinson Louisme was the third Green Wave player to reach double figures with 11 points.
Captain scored 17 points to pace ECU (6-22, 1-14), while Jenkins added 15, Brandon Evans had 11 and Cory Farmer finished with 10.
