EVANSTON, Ill. (AP)—Roderick Wilmont made a school-record nine 3-pointers while scoring a career-high 31 points Wednesday night as Indiana made a push for the NCAA tournament by holding off a late rally and beating Northwestern 69-65.

Wilmont was 9-for-13 on 3-pointers—the previous school record was eight, held by several players—and had 17 points in the second half for the Hoosiers (19-9, 9-6). Indiana will close the regular season at home against Penn State on Saturday before heading to next week’s Big Ten tournament in Chicago.

Tim Doyle led Northwestern with 17 points in his final home game.

Wilmont, who also finished with 12 rebounds, ended the first half with three 3-pointers in the final 90 seconds. He then hit three more 3-pointers in the first seven minutes of the second half as the Hoosiers opened up a 48-39 lead.

Northwestern (13-16, 2-13), playing its final home game, scrapped for seven points in a row and cut it to 48-46 on Kevin Coble’s layup on a nifty pass from Doyle.

But Wilmont hit another from long range just as the shot clock was expiring with 7:20 left, connected on a trey from the deep corner and then made a followup shot as the Hoosiers went back up by 10 with a little more than three minutes to go.

Northwestern wasn’t done. Doyle made a steal and then two layups after two Hoosier turnovers as the Wildcats ran off six straight points and got within 63-58 with 1:40 remaining.

Sterling Williams hit a 3-pointer for the Wildcats to cut it to four with just less than a minute to go, and Northwestern was within two when Jeff Ryan hit a shot from underneath with 14 seconds to go.

Trailing by three, the Wildcats had a chance to tie but Craig Moore’s 3-pointer was short and Indiana’s A.J. Ratliff made a free throw with 1.2 seconds remaining to wrap up the win.

Wilmont made three straight 3-pointers in the final minute and a half of the first half, including one just before the buzzer that he banked in after a behind-the-back dribble, giving the Hoosiers a 32-28 lead.
