NEW ORLEANS (AP)—Bo McCalebb had 31 points and 15 rebounds and broke New Orleans’ 34-year-old scoring record as he led the Privateers to an 88-75 win over Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday and a home berth in the first round of the Sun Belt Tournament.
The junior’s 1,877 career points are 23 more than the mark set by Mel Henderson, who played for UNO from 1969-1973.
McCalebb had 17 points in the second half and was 14-of-23 from the field for the Privateers (13-16, 9-9). New Orleans is the seventh seed in the tournrament and will host 10th seeded Arkansas-Little Rock on Wednesday.
Shaun Reynolds had 20 points for the Privateers (13-16, 9-9 Sun Belt) and James Parlow had 16 points thanks to a 4-of-4 night from the 3-point line.
Tony Hooper led ULM (17-13, 11-7) with 24 points, and Jonas Brown had 16 points and six assists. The Privateers held the Warhawks to just 38 percent shooting in the second half, and Louisiana-Monroe was 8-of-24 from the 3-point line.
ULM trailed by 12 with 13:57 left but went on a 13-1 run to tie it with 9:36 remaining. But UNO responded with a 7-0 spurt and never led by less than five the rest of the way.
Reynolds had 13 points in the final half and was 9-of-9 from the free throw line (10-of-11 overall).
UNO shot 58 percent overall and 62 percent in the first half.
The win clinches a first-round home game for the Privateers in next week’s Sun Belt Tournament.
