CINCINNATI (AP)—Justin Doellman scored a career-high 29 points, Drew Lavender added 22 points and seven rebounds and Xavier never trailed in a 98-72 victory over Rhode Island on Wednesday night.
Lavender was perfect on four 3-point and eight free-throw attempts, and six of those foul shots came in an 18-6 run that stretched the lead to 92-66 with 2:51 remaining, capped by a Doellman layup. The two then sat for the rest of the game as the teams traded layups and foul shots.
Doellman and Stanley Burrell each shot 7-for-8 on free throws as the Musketeers (20-7, 10-3 Atlantic-10) went 30-for-36 (83 percent) at the line, compared with 18-for-23 (78 percent) on foul shots for the Rams.
Jimmy Baron scored 21 points, Will Daniels had 17, Kahiem Seawright 16 and Darrell Harris 10 for Rhode Island (17-11, 10-4).
Xavier shot 71 percent (17-for-24) in the second half and scored 22 points off turnovers, to 6 for the Rams.
