DELAND, Fla. (AP)—A.J. Smith scored 22 points and Gabe McMillen added 16 as Stetson defeated North Florida 74-63 Thursday night.
Smith nailed all eight of his shots from the field, including six 3-pointers.
The Hatters (10-17, 5-10 Atlantic Sun Conference) have now won all five meetings ever played against North Florida. The visiting Ospreys (2-24, 0-15), in only their second season as a Division I club, lost their 14th straight game.
Chris Timberlake scored 21 points and Germaine Sparkes contributed 13 for North Florida.
Stetson, sluggish early, used six 3-pointers—two each by McMillen and Smith—to assume control by halftime. The Hatters outscored North Florida 24-5 over the last nine minutes of the half to overcome a 21-12 deficit and post a 36-26 intermission advantage.
The Hatters edged to a 14-point margin, 47-33, with 12:23 showing. Center Tim Lang, who finished with 11 points, did the bulk of the damage inside. But the Ospreys, led by Timberlake’s three baskets, closed the gap to five points, 59-54, with 3:16 left.
