Winthrop 78, Charleston Southern 54
ROCK HILL, S.C. (AP)—Michael Jenkins and Torrell Martin each scored 14 points to lead Winthrop to a 78-54 win over Charleston Southern on Wednesday night.
The Eagles (22-4, 12-0 Big South Conference) jumped to a 12-2 lead and never trailed to pick up their 12th straight win.
Winthrop remains just one of three Division I teams unbeaten in conference play along with Florida and Memphis. With four games remaining, the Eagles are trying to become the first Big South team to finish with a perfect league record.
The Buccaneers (8-19, 2-10) cut their deficit to five with 7:15 left in the first half before Winthrop went on a 18-2 run to lead 40-19 at the break. Charleston Southern would get no closer than 16 points the rest of the way.
The Eagles shot 52.6 percent from the floor (30-of-57), holding the Buccaneers to 34.6 percent shooting (18-of-52).
Winthrop outscored Charleston Southern 38-16 in the paint.
Donnell Covington scored 15 points and Dwayne Jackson and Shelton Carter each added eight for the Buccaneers.
Craig Bradshaw scored 13 points and Antwon Harris added 10 for the Eagles.
