W. Illinois 64, Oakland, Mich. 63
ROCHESTER, Mich. (AP)—Sammy Hunter had 15 points, including the game-winning three-point play, to help Western Illinois upset Oakland 64-63 on Thursday night.
Hunter was fouled on a driving layup with 2.4 seconds to play and made the free throw after an Oakland timeout to give the Leathernecks (6-19, 2-8 Mid-Continent) the lead for good.
The Golden Grizzlies’ Jonathon Jones launched a shot just inside the halfcourt line that bounced inside the rim and out as time expired.
Vova Severovas scored 14 points and Derick Nelson added 13 points and 12 rebounds for Oakland (14-11, 7-2), whose three-game winning streak ended.
Oakland led 36-35 at intermission but Western Illinois made eight of its first 10 shots in the second half and led 53-48 with 11 minutes to play. The Grizzlies answered with a 10-0 run in the next six minutes but never shook the Leathernecks, who tied the game with an 8-3 streak.
Western Illinois got 14 points from Jerryck Owens-Murrey. Jones had six assists for Oakland.
