Portland St. 70, Montana 68
MISSOULA, Mont. (AP)—Juma Kamara scored 14 of his 17 points in the first half to propel Portland State to a 70-68 win over Montana in a Big Sky Conference men’s basketball game Thursday night.
Deonte Huff added 15 points and Dupree Lucas 12 as Portland State improved to 6-5 in the Big Sky, 15-9 overall. Jordan Hasquet led the Griz (5-4, 11-11) with 25 points.
The Vikings led 41-31 at halftime.
Montana came within 45-39 on a 3-pointer by Hasquet with 17:28 to play, but the Vikings responded with an 11-2 run to open a 56-41 lead with 14:08 remaining.
Kamara made a pair of free throws to make it 55-41 after a technical foul on Montana coach Wayne Tinkle. Kamara added another seconds later to give the Vikings their biggest lead of the game.
The Griz used a 19-5 run to get back into the game, capped by a 3-pointer by Stuart Mayes that gave the Griz a 67-66 lead with 2:31 to play.
Two free throws by Anthony Washington gave the Vikings the lead at 68-67 with 1:45 left. Hasquet made one of two free throws with 1:16 to play to tie the game.
The Vikings took the lead, 70-68, with 26 seconds left, on a pair of free throws by Paul Hafford after his shot apparently was blocked by Hasquet, who was called for the foul.
The Griz worked for a final tying shot, but Andrew Strait’s hook bounced out and Bryan Ellis’ short put-back also rolled off the rim.
