Oral Roberts 73, Oakland 63
TULSA, Okla. (AP)—Marchello Vealy had 17 points and a career-high 16 rebounds as he came off the bench to propel Oral Roberts past Oakland 73-63 on Thursday night.
Vealy, who was 6-of-8 from the field, had missed the previous two games with a groin injury. He scored 12 of his points in the final 16 minutes after ORU, which led most of the game, fell behind 42-39.
Caleb Green scored 19 points and grabbed nine rebounds for the Golden Eagles (14-7, 6-0 Mid-Continent), who broke a tie with Oakland (12-10, 5-1) to take over the lead in the Mid-Continent Conference.
Derick Nelson paced the Grizzlies with 19 points and Vova Severovas added 12 points.
Shawn King’s layup with 10 minutes left snapped a tie and gave ORU a 48-46 lead it never relinquished.
Oral Roberts was leading 56-52 with 5:03 left when Severovas missed two free throws and Ken Tutt followed with a trey and Green sank a shot off his own miss to stretch the advantage to 61-52. Oakland could not get closer than seven points during the rest of the game.
Oakland (12-10, 5-1) trailed for the first 22 minutes of the game until taking its first lead, 36-34, on a basket by Nelson that capped a 15-0 run late in the first half.
The Golden Eagles, who have won eight in a row, shot 55 percent from the field compared to 40 percent for Oakland.
Oral Roberts outrebounded Oakland 38-29.
