HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (AP)—Hitting four straight free throws in the last 14 seconds sealed a 68-63 victory for Alabama A&M over Southern University Monday night.
The Bulldogs (7-11, 2-5 Southwestern Athletic Conference) were leading defending SWAC champion, Southern (4-16, 3-5 SWAC), by 58-41 with 3:50 left to play. Then came 10 turnovers and Southern came back to within three points twice in the final minute. But the Bulldogs held on tight and pulled off the win.
Trant Simpson led Alabama A&M with 14 points and six assists but fouled out with 2:44 left.
Steffon Wiley led Southern with a game-high 17 points. Chris Davis had 15 points and Jarvaris Bradford had 10. The Jaguars shot just 28 percent from the floor.
The Bulldogs outrebounded the Jaguars 53-39.
