Belmont 70, Gardner-Webb 54
BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (AP)—Boomer Herndon’s 21 points helped Belmont rally to defeat Gardner-Webb 70-54 on Saturday.
Justin Hare added 12 points for Belmont (13-7, 7-2 Atlantic Sun Conference), which shot 78.9 percent in the second half, hitting 15-of-19 for the comeback win.
Gardner-Webb (5-14, 3-5) led for the first 29 minutes of the game, leading 31-24 at the break, but suffered a field goal drought that went 11:11 in the second half.
The Bulldogs had a 37-32 lead with 14:49 remaining until Belmont went on a 17-2 run to take a 49-39 lead with 6:46 remaining on two free throws from Shane Dansby.
Gardner-Webb didn’t hit another field goal until Takayo Siddle hit a 3-pointer with 3:38 left in the game, cutting the Bruins’ lead to 58-45. But the Bulldogs would get no closer than 10 points as the Bruins made 10 straight free throws down the stretch.
Thomas Sanders led Gardner-Webb with 17 points and 11 rebounds, while Grayson Flittner added 10.
