HAMMOND, La. (AP)—Daryl Cohen hit a 3-point shot to put Southeastern Louisiana ahead for good with 5:03 left, and the Lions hit six free throws in the last 25 seconds to hold off Nicholls State, 75-69, Saturday night.
Cohen finished with 20 points, including six 3-point shots, and Quennell Green added 16 for Southeastern (11-7, 3-2 Southland). The Lions were 24-of-29 on free throws, with their five misses all in the first half.
Cohen also helped lead a Lions defense that forced 17 turnovers, 14 in the first half, and held NSU’s leading scorer, Stefan Blaszczynski, to 10 points, including 1-for-6 from the floor.
The half ended with Southeastern ahead only 35-33. But but Ryan Bathie scored five straight points to open the second half for Nicholls State (3-16, 2-3), including a 3-pointer that tied the game at 38-38. The Colonels led 41-40, with 17:25 remaining.
Neither team led by more than four points for the rest of the game. The teams traded leads eight times.
Nicholls State was led by James Dixon’s 16 points. Ryan Bathie had 15 and Mitch Boyce 11.
Kevyn Green, who made four straight free throws for Southeastern after the Colonels closed to 69-67, had 15 points and Joseph Polite had 14.
