Jacksonville 69, Stetson 65
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP)—Senior Jesse Kimbrough scored 17 points and Jacksonville survived a late rally by Stetson to earn a 69-65 win over the visiting Hatters on Saturday in an Atlantic Sun Conference game.
Jacksonville (9-10, 5-4) broke a 44-all tie with 8 minutes left in the second half and went on a 16-4 scoring run for a 60-48 lead. Kimbrough hit a 3-point shot, added a jumper and closed the run with a pair of free throws to account for 7 of the 16 points.
But with 2:02 remaining, Stetson (7-13, 3-6) mounted a late rally. The Hatters outscored the Dolphins 12-3 in the next 74 seconds to trail by just three points at 63-60 with 48 seconds remaining. That was as close as they got, as JU responded with four free throws in the next 30 seconds to preserve the win, its fifth victory in seven games.
It was an evenly played first half with the score tied five times and the lead changing on six occasions. Jacksonville broke the last tie at 21-all by outscoring Stetson 9-4 in the final seven minutes for a 30-25 lead at intermission.
Kimbrough connected on three-of-four attempts from 3-point range as the Dolphins matched a season-high of eight treys (in 21 attempts).
Garfield Blair’s 17 points led three Stetson players in double figures.
