Northwestern St. 98, McNeese St. 90, OT
NATCHITOCHES, La. (AP)—Luke Rogers scored 26 points and Trey Gilder added 20, including a pair of free throws that sent the game into overtime, and Northwestern State outlasted McNeese State 98-90 in a Southland Conference matchup on Thursday.
Northwestern State (8-9, 3-2 SLC) led nearly the entire second half but McNeese went up 78-76 on a 7-0 burst capped by a basket by Jarvis Bradley with 1:08 to go. Both teams missed shots down the stretch before Gilder was fouled in the lane with 1.5 seconds left in regulation and sank both free throws to tie the game.
McNeese (6-12, 1-3) got 23 points from Quentin Gonzales and 17 points and 10 rebounds by Bradley.
Northwestern never trailed in overtime.
McNeese rallied from a six-point deficit to forge an 87-87 tie with 1:17 to go, but Northwestern State’s Kennan Jones sank three free throws in two separate trips to the line sandwiched around Jermaine Spencer’s offensive rebound of a miss by Jones to put the Demons ahead 90-87 with 50 seconds left.
The Cowboys scratched back within 93-90 on a layup by Bradley with 19 seconds on the clock, but the Demons quickly inbounded to Rogers, who was fouled and sank a free throw two seconds later. Colby Bargeman came up with a steal, was fouled with 16 seconds left and sank both free throws to pad the lead to 96-90.
He finished with 15 points, four assists and three steals for Northwestern, which got 11 points and six assists from Jones and 10 points and six rebounds by Gerrell Thomas.
John Pinchon also scored 14 points for McNeese and John Ford added 12 and had a game-high 10 assists.
The game was tied at 38-38 at the half.
